Keeara Rhoades Biography
Keeara Rhoades is a multimedia artist and educator whose work explores liminal spaces within perception, transformation, and the slippages between memory, labor, and time. Growing up in Wyoming, surrounded by vast landscapes and deep histories of extraction, industry, and erasure, Rhoades developed an early fascination with the remnants of time—what is preserved, what is lost, and what is endlessly repeated in new forms.
Working across video, installation, photography, and text, she engages in recursive processes of image-making that shift or interrupt expectations held within the original and the copy, the intimate and the artificial, the past and the present. Drawing from the philosophical concept of the simulacrum, Rhoades constructs visual loops, lyrical prose, and mirrored realities that interrogate the ways we record, remember, and reinvent ourselves through digital and photographic archives. Her practice frequently incorporates collaboration, binding together acts of invention and intervention—highlighting the instability of authorship and the combined agency of shared and constructed memory. In her ongoing explorations, a photograph is never just a photograph; it is a mask, a witness, a ghost, a reel unspooling into infinity. The act of seeing is an act of distortion, and the act of remembering is an act of reimagining.
Rhoades’ work has been exhibited in spaces that embrace the intersection of image, language, and theory, inviting viewers into an uncanny sensorium where time loops and perception stutters. Through lyrical compositions—whether visual or written—her works question what it means to capture a moment, only to watch it unravel into paradoxical echoes where time bends back on itself, and the margins of visibility become sites of both disappearance and revelation.
As an educator, Rhoades expands her artistic roots by fostering critical inquiry and creative exploration, encouraging students to disrupt linear narratives and embrace the generative instability of the moving image. Her teaching practice, like her art, is a continuous act of excavation—unearthing hidden structures, unraveling temporal loops, and reconstructing meaning in the face of dissolution. By manipulating time and perspective, Rhoades invites the viewer into a world where the past is both captured and dissolving, where the image is never quite still, and where the objective and the subjective co-exist as witness in a state of perpetual transformation.
